Perhaps playing cards by the harbour in Kannur is illegal or maybe they were gambling. Either way the chief honcho seemed not to want me to catch him in the act, much to the amusement of the others. It was late in the day and probably many of these men had been out fishing all day. The crew of one newly returned boat offered me some whisky, so they had probably had a successful days fishing.
